Whereas prior forms of nihilism are 'modernist' because they seek to codify reality, postmodernism creates a new formulation of nihilism - 'postmodern nihilism' - that is itself sublime. This is explored in relation to a broad survey of postmodern literature in two chapters, the first on aesthetics and the second on ethics. It offers a coherent thesis for reappraising the relationship between nihilism and the sublime, and grounds this argument with frequent references to postmodern literature, making it a book suitable for both researchers and those more generally interested in postmodern literature.

Essential. A crucial revelation on Nihilism!

I paid $75 for my copy. I was not disappointed. Carefully researched. Well written. Most importantly, its thesis is a groundbreaking direction for those who Study Nietzsche yet still need examples of practical implications of Nihilism on Art, religion and discourse throughout the entire history of philosophical Pessimism. Nihilism and Art are a closer marriage than we suspect, and the sublime--including everything from the romantics all the way back to the Taoist poets--is but the mystic side of Nihilism; If thought is the vehicle which brings us to our breaking point of nullity, the artistic sublime is the revelation of Bataille's "Beyond", where words fail. This book was for me, a crucial link in my studies and opened up several new avenues of investigation. It prompted me to see even greater implications of past works and to challenge my bias that the Post-Modern was in some way alienated from the rest of artistic expression.

I would also recommend the book, "In Grand Purple Robes of Madness" which might serve as a companion to this work, done from a slightly different approach.

About the Author
Carole Wade earned her Ph.D. in cognitive psychology at Stanford University. She began her academic career at the University of New Mexico, where she taught courses in psycholinguistics and developed the first course at the university on the psychology of gender. She was professor of psychology for 10 years at San Diego Mesa College and then taught at College of Marin and Dominican University of California. Dr. Wade has written and lectured widely on critical thinking and the enhancement of psychology education. In addition to this text, she and Carol Tavris have written Psychology; Psychology in Perspective; and The Longest War: Sex Differences in Perspective.

Carol Tavris earned her Ph.D. in the interdisciplinary program in social psychology at the University of Michigan. She writes and lectures extensively on diverse topics in psychological science and critical thinking. In addition to working with Carole Wade, Dr. Tavris is coauthor with Elliot Aronson of Mistakes Were Made (But Not by Me): Why We Justify Foolish Beliefs, Bad Decisions, and Hurtful Acts. She is also author of The Mismeasure of Woman and Anger: The Misunderstood Emotion. Many of her book reviews and opinion essays have been collected in Psychobabble and Biobunk: Using Psychology to Think Critically About Issues in the News.

Contributor Alan Swinkels is Professor and Chair of Psychology at St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas. He has received numerous research, advising, and teaching awards throughout his career, including being recognized as a Texas State Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation and the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education.

About the Author

He then became the world's bestselling writer, many of his novels were filmed, and his books translated into almost every language. He died in 1998.

A true epic, stands the test of time

I expect there will be a Robbins renaissance now that his work has been Kindleized. People just dont write the way he did anymore, and looking back, it shows he was the master.

I read my way through his catalogue as young man when the stories were still freshly minted. The Adventures was one I read many times. It was captivating, titillating, and engrossing all at the same time.

Robbins had a gift for characterization that I dont beleive has been equalled. The story here follows the life of a young boy who witnesses the rape and murder of his mother and sister by revolutionaries in a small south American country. He is taken under the wing of the commander, and becomes one himself rising in the new regime. Later he is sent to Europe and becomes the darling of the social set, eventually taking over his fathers posting as consul.The story follows Dax and key characters he encounters (whose subplots are seamlessly woven into the framework of the book) through the middle years of the twentieth century.

In the Adventurers Robbins draws a poignant picture of a man who, in devotion to his country and driven by a desire to help the helpless, is used by the people he loves and trusts and ultimately cast aside in the bonfire of their own shortcomings.

We also have a love story, of two starcrossed lovers who because of who they are can never truly be together.

Not only is Dax a character that pops to life, but this is true of the secondary characters as well.

So in the Adventurers, we have an epic that spans time and continents. There is sex, intrigue, violence, all wrapped in a solid tapestry of great dialogue and narrative spun by the master of late twentieth century American story telling.

Finally, this was Robbins at his absolute best. If you read only one by him, make it this one!

I am reviewing this book before I re-read it because I want to give my first impression of it. This is very nostalgic for me because I was one of those kids who loved to read and was reading Harold Robbins in middle school. So this is what I remember at 50 yrs old. There was a lot of action, betrayal, sex and violence and it was and i am sure still is fantastic. I am not going to give it 4 or5 stars because you can't call it great literature, but I am waiting to read it on my summer vacation because you can call it great fun. I am hoping the adult me isn't disappointed because my tastes have changed. Oh who am I kidding, everyone loves a good sexy easy read. I hope my memory of the book let me give a good review, if not, never mind.

Adventurers by Harold Robbins

I purchased this book, "The Adventurers" by Harold Robbins, as a Mass Market Paperback and used, for $0.01 plus shipping, to read again to determine if my memory serves me well, and determine if I still consider this to be one of the best books I have read for entertainment. As I recall this book is a life story, fiction of course, based on the life of a Diplomat's son who is introduced into a world of travel and intrigue, where he is orphaned and left to be cared for by Fat Cat, an overseer who devotes his life to look after being a servant ward of the father. Politics and Revenge for the murders of his Mother and Father move the story of Dax and Fat Cat as they travel and live. I will amend this review as I feel necessary, after rereading it and add to detract from what I have written here.

Mary Anne Poatsy, Series Editor, Windows 10 Author

Mary Anne is a senior faculty member at Montgomery County Community College, teaching various computer application and concepts courses in face-to-face and online environments. She holds a B.A. in Psychology and Education from Mount Holyoke College and an M.B.A. in Finance from Northwestern University’s Kellogg Graduate School of Management. Mary Anne has more than 12 years of educational experience. She is currently adjunct faculty at Gwynedd-Mercy College and Montgomery County Community College. She has also taught at Bucks County Community College and Muhlenberg College, as well as conducted personal training. Before teaching, she was Vice President at Shearson Lehman in the Municipal Bond Investment Banking Department.

 

Dr. Keith Mulbery, Excel Author

Dr. Keith Mulbery is the Department Chair and a Professor in the Information Systems and Technology Department at Utah Valley University (UVU), where he currently teaches systems analysis and design, and global and ethical issues in information systems and technology. He has also taught computer applications, C# programming, and management information systems. Keith served as Interim Associate Dean, School of Computing, in the College of Technology and Computing at UVU. Keith received his B.S. and M.Ed. in Business Education from Southwestern Oklahoma State University and earned his Ph.D. in Education with an emphasis in Business Information Systems at Utah State University. His dissertation topic was computer-assisted instruction using Prentice Hall’s Train and Assess IT program (the predecessor to MyITLab) to supplement traditional instruction in basic computer proficiency courses.

Cynthia Krebs is the Program Director of Business and Marketing Education at Utah Valley University. Jason Davidson is a faculty member in the College of Business at Butler University, where he teaches Advanced Web Design, Data Networks, Data Analysis and Business Modeling, and introductory information systems courses. Since 1994, Dr. Linda K. Lau is a Management Information Systems (MIS) faculty at the College of Business and Economics, Longwood University, located in Farmville, Virginia. Besides teaching and advising, Linda has authored and co-authored numerous journal and conference articles and textbooks, edited two books, and sat on several editorial boards. Her current research interest focuses on cyber security and forensics, and she is the associate editor for the Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law (JDFSL). She also worked as a financial consultant with Salomon Smith Barney from 1999—2000 before returning to the academic world. Linda resides in Richmond with her family.

Rebecca Lawson is a professor in the Computer Information Technologies program at Lansing Community College. She coordinates the curriculum, develops the instructional materials, and teaches for the E-Business curriculum. She also serves as the Online Faculty Coordinator at the Center for Teaching Excellence at LCC. In that role, she develops and facilitates online workshops for faculty learning to teach online. This is the best children's book I have ever read

This is the best children's book I have ever read. We keep it on our coffee table and every visitor, child or adult, picks it up and is immediately hooked. They love the story, the illustrations, and the fact that the reader is drawn into the story by the chatter between Hallie and her grandparent farmers, Lollie and Pops. What a great story about a little girl's fascination with all the love, color, activity, plant life, and animals on the farm. It's fun to anticipate her grandparents' answers to her endless questions and to share in the lessons she learns at the farm that she so loves to visit.

Hamburg beginnings

This is a thin book but no page is wasted.

Jürgen Vollmer, perhaps the least visible of the three Hamburg Exis, compacts his contribution to Beatles history between these covers. His photos (1961, second Hamburg visit) are more journalistic in style than those by Astrid Kirchherr. This was a direction he consciously aimed for. Interestingly, despite the "live" feel, they were nevertheless posed!

The oh so brief text starts in 1960 and tells of how he and his Exi friends risked scorn and drubbing to enter a Rocker's dive called the Kaiserkeller to listen to sounds fresh to their middle-class German ears. He recalls one uncomfortable tussle he had with Rockers who had no time for the British musicians on stage nor this small group of fans at the front table.

As they get to know the boys, the character of the Beatles, evident even then (1960), is wonderfully illustrated with the "Flea" incident!

We learn that George was aware that under German law he was not allowed to be in the club after 10pm and that he would leave and the others would meet up with him later. This is news to me, as I always understood he was deported precisely because he was underage...

He continues the story with the holiday in Paris where Paul and John met up with him. They soon realized their Elvis quiffs and leathers were not working on the Parisian ladies, so exchanged their clothes for arty ones and asked Jürgen to give them his hairstyle. The sole motivation for the Moptop was to pull the Parisian bohemian girls!

And that is where his story ends. Far too soon!

The text is German and Engish in parallel. Being fluent in both languages, I found the translation to be excellent (very rare!) but the German is stylistically tighter and may have been the original; although the conversations with the Beatles obviously were in English: when John wants to know why Jürgen wants to photograph the Beatles, Jürgen says "for art". John then sneers, "Who's Art?!" - the pun is lost in the German text!

The photos can be divided into four categories: Firstly, of young Hamburg people (good photos, but they convey little of the Hamburg of the time), and what seems to be three separate photo sessions with the Beatles. One was in the Top Ten club, one (2 photos from a reel of 12) of John in a doorway and a blurred George, Paul and Stuart walking past him (this became the famous Rock and Roll album cover photo) and one session with a very young George around the Hamburg harbour.

This book has a place on every Beatles fan bookshelf as the definitive Jürgen Vollmer collection of early Beatles photos. The only distraction is the insecure scattering of large print Beatles quotes to add weight to these photos. No need. Those beginnings in Hamburg, as told by an Exi with his camera and in his mother tongue make this volume eminently desirable.
