Mappa Mundi: The Hereford World Map, by P.D.A. Harvey

The Hereford Mappa Mundi is the largest and most elaborate world map surviving from before the fifteenth century. Made in the late thirteenth century at Lincoln by one Richard of Holdingham, it was then taken to Hereford, which has been its home ever since.

There has been much speculation as to the identity of the author of the map, and the purposes for which it might have been made. More than just a map, it can be seen as an encyclopedia of distant lands, their peoples, myths, and natural history, all held together within a framework of Christian belief - the figure of Christ in judgment is placed in a prominent position at the top of the map. It presents an illuminating view of the world as it appeared to a cultured and well-read person in thirteenth-century England.

In this book, P.D.A. Harvey provides an authoritative interpretation of the map, based on a fresh examination of its surface, and reveals evidence of how it was made, what it depicts, and what sources the author used. Many detailed photographs, specially commissioned for the purpose, together with illustrations of other related medieval maps, accompany the text.

Review

'P.D.A. Harvey's book now provides a scholarly, and at the same time highly readable, analysis of the map, setting it in its intellectual and cartographic context.'

(Michael Prestwich Times Literary Supplement)

'Harvey has studied the map and all that has been written about it to provide a life story unique in the world of cartography. Color illustrations, appendixes, and select bibliography render his book an artistic and valuable addition to the literature.'

(G.J. Martin Choice)

Mappa Mundi, A Real Treasure
By Ka Riley
Simple enough to help a beginner, but with enough detail for a graduate student who needs an overview, this little gem is well written and filled with illustrations. P. D. A. Harvey does an excellent job of shortening and tightening his longer text to a version rich in detail. An interesting and fun read.

Review
"As with nearly every DK book I've ever read, this collection by Billy Wrecks and Danny Graydon (with a foreword by comics writing icon, Roger Stern) succeeds in being exhaustive yet condensed, providing the reader with access to just about everything that has touched Doctor StephenStrange's life since he became the Master of the Mystic Arts. Hardcoverwith gilt-edged pages (a nice touch!), this oversized book takes readers on an encyclopedic tour of Strange's origins, his allies, hisassociates, his enemies, and the notable turning points in his life.
"Each page is filled with artwork culled from the different decades of the publication of DOCTOR STRANGE. The clashing, divergent styles puttogether on the same page add to the notion that the world can be seenin differing ways through Strange's eyes, almost as if each era was awindow into a different dimension." -- RJ Carter

The saga of the Sorcerer Supreme...with one major flaw
By L. W. Swint
"I am known as Dr. Strange--Sorcerer Supreme of this material realm..."

'"Supreme"? Is then...no mortal magician stronger than you?"

"No..."

Doctor Strange and Lilia the Gypsy Queen.
Adapted from the story, "Portal to the Past," by Steve Englehart, Mike Friedrich, and Frank Brunner,
originally published in "Marvel Premiere" #12, 1973.

"The Mysterious World of Doctor Strange" is a hardcover book offering an overview of the most unique Marvel Comics superhero, Doctor Steven Strange, "Master of the Mystic Arts!" It is the first time such a volume has been produced for the character created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, and covers the length and breadth of his extraordinary exploits: from his early days as a former doctor of medicine, his spiritual resurrection as the prized pupil of the wise wizard revered as the Ancient One, to his contemporary status as Earth's Sorcerer Supreme, protector of the natural and the supernatural on our precious planet.

This lesser book of the Vishanti is divided into 7 chapters:

"Strange Magic:"
This introductory section of the book serves as an abridged biography of Steven Strange, providing brief glimpses into his amazing adventures as he came to become Earth's Mystic Master.

"Side by Side:"
At 44 pages, this is the longest chapter in the 176 paged book. While Doctor Strange's special title of Sorcerer Supreme causes him to be involved in magical missions only he can master, they bring him into contact not just with individuals of the supernatural worlds but also encounters with Earth's ever growing, ever evolving superhero community. Over time, the wizard of other realities came to build lasting relationships with many remarkable men and women. This chapter details the friends and allies Doctor Strange has gained in his career. They include: The Ancient One, the mystic mentor to Doctor Strange. Wong, the "manservant, confidant, and housekeeper" to the master mage's unique home, the Sanctum Sanctorum. Clea, Doctor Strange's great love, the beautiful sorceress from the Dark Dimension. Spider-man, an unlikely but recurring comrade in arms to the "Master of the Mystic Arts" in many an adventure. Doctor Doom, the grim and megalomanical monarch of the European nation Latveria, has been an occasional ally to Doctor Strange, although he is one not to be fully trusted. The Sorcerer Supreme has also allied himself with other super heroes. For example, he is the founder and leader of the team called "The Defenders," whose original members included the incredible Hulk and Namor the Submariner. The team would later include such characters as the cosmic spacefarer, the Silver Surfer; the Valkyrie, warrior woman of Asgard; Wolverine, the adamantium-boned mutant; and the martial arts master known as Iron Fist. Doctor Strange is also a member of the mysterious team called the "The Illuminati," which consists of Steven Strange; Reed Richards, leader of the Fantastic Four; Prince Namor; Professor Charles Xavier of the X-Men: T'Challa, the Black Panther, King of the African land of Wakanda; Black Bolt, leader of the Inhumans; and Tony Stark alias Iron Man, the organizer of this secret society, formed to secretly protect the Earth. In recent years, Doctor Strange has also become a member of "The New Avengers," a branch of the original super team, "The Avengers." Among its diverse rank of heroes are: Spider-man; Wolverine; Ben Grimm, one quarter member of the Fantastic Four; Luke Cage the Power Man; Jessica Jones, Luke Cage's wife and a super powered private investigator; and Carol Danvers, the cosmic powered heroine known as Captain Marvel.

"Enemy Mine:"
This chapter delves into the mystical villains Doctor Strange has battled in defense of Earth. Some of his major foes include: Nightmare, shadowy lord of the realm of dreams; Baron Karl Mordo, disgraced ex-apprentice of the Ancient One, and archenemy of Doctor Strange; and the Dread Dormammu, demonic nemesis from the Dark Dimension. The "Master of the Mystic Arts" has also battled such malevolent enemies as Mephisto, Marvel Comics' crimson incarnation of "the Devil;" Umar the Unrelenting, the sinister sister of Dormammu; and Dracula, the bloodthirsty lord of vampires.

"The All Powerful:"
As Sorcerer Supreme of Earth, Doctor Strange has encountered entities that exist on levels beyond the mortal concepts of good and evil. This chapter describes these awe-inspiring figures. There is Eternity, a being that encompasses the entirety of space and time, envisioned as the universe itself in human form. The Vishanti, a trinity of cosmic beings whose history form the foundation of the title and responsibility, Sorcerer Supreme. The Living Tribunal, the golden, three headed embodiment and guardian of cosmic balance in the myriad realms of the multiverse. These and other sentient cosmic forces have the power to affect the concept humanity calls reality on an inter-galactic and inter-dimensional scale, and part of Doctor Strange's immense task as Sorcerer Supreme is to represent and protect the humble world of Earth from entities whose vision transcends the boundaries of our universe.

"Mystic Realms:"
Doctor Strange's adventures have taken him far beyond the deep blue seas and vast continents of the Earth. His excursions have had the seer of the supernatural enter worlds that are not worlds and dimensions where dreams are made real. This chapter attempts to describe the almost indescribable, the planes of existence that the Sorcerer Supreme regularly explores as guardian of our cherished planetary home. Starting from his Sanctum Sanctorum, a New York victorian brownstone which is more than just a spacious home to the master of magic, Doctor Strange can enter such other dimensional realities as the Dark Dimension of Dormammu, a domain without form or structure; the ethereal realm of Eternity, which is just an aspect of the entity's totality; or the unworld of Ditkopolis, a dimension that pays artistic tribute to the co-creator of Doctor Strange, Steve Ditko.

"Spellbound:"
This section of the book describes Doctor Strange's relationship with the power of magic, his bond with the mystical forces of the Earth and beyond, and his spiritual link to such magical entities as the Vishanti, as well as Cyttorak, Farallah, Ikonn, Raggador, and Watoomb. These cosmic connections form the basis of some of the spells the "Master of the Mystic Arts" invokes, like "the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak," the Roving Rings of Raggador," and the "Winds of Watoomb."

"Objects of Enchantment:"
The book's final chapter, these pages describe the invaluable mystical tomes and talismans Doctor Strange has that aid him in his charge as defender of Earth. It offers interesting background histories of these remarkable relics, which include: the Eye of Agamotto, the magical amulet that is the special ornament of Doctor Strange's mystical uniform; the scarlet Cloak of Levitation, which gives the Sorcerer Supreme the gift of flight; and the Book of the Vishanti, the great volume of magical knowledge, spells and incantations compiled by former masters of white magic.

As written by Billy Wrecks, Nick Jones, and Danny Graydon, "The Mysterious World of Doctor Strange" is a fascinating, intriguing and entertaining exploration of the "strange tales" of the great comic character that is Doctor Strange. It reveals many concepts and background facts that even this long time fan of the character did not know, like: Baron Mordo's middle name is 'Amadeus!' Or the distinctive round window designed atop Doctor Strange's Sanctum Sanctorum is called "The Window of Worlds," and "is decorated with a pattern of the Anomaly Rue, the Seal of the Vishanti." This reviewer had read of Mr. Ditko's fondness for the work of Will Eisner and his classic comic creation "The Spirit," and long considered the unique window from Doctor Strange's home to be an homage to the similar window Mr. Eisner drew on "The Spirit's" home in the character's secret hide-away in Wildwood Cemetery. The added information about the Sorcerer Supreme's home is a rewarding bit of trivia.

The book is also richly illustrated with a multitude of images from the mystic master's continuing comic chronicles. Some of these dramatic drawings are reproduced in a larger size than when they were originally published in the comics which add to their impact. But this reviewer finds a major fault with this otherwise enjoyable tome. While paging through this book, I'm sure many of its readers will be interested in learning more about Doctor Strange and his comic adventures, desiring to read the original stories touched upon in this volume. Most unfortunately, this book provides no 'suggested further reading' section, something that would guide curious readers to further expand their possible enjoyment of the character's imaginative comic experiences. This is a truly regrettable editorial choice by DK Publishing.

Despite that flaw, "The Mysterious World of Doctor Strange" is a high quality publication. Featuring a stunning painted cover by illustrator Alex Ross, a sewn binding and even gold embossed end pages, giving the book that much more of a magical touch, it is a book any Doctor Strange fan will be happy to add to their library.

It comes recommended by this reviewer. Enjoy and may the Vishanti watch over you!

Wide variety of information. Good Book!
By Galactus
Usually get most things at Amazon, but got this at a local Comic Book Store. I really liked it. Has enough information to get you caught up before the movie and covers a lot of details I had no idea about and will keep you from having to read 200 comics to find out!

Happiness and the Christian Moral Life: An Introduction to Christian Ethics, by Paul J. Wadell

Happiness and the Christian Moral Life suggests that the heart of Christian ethics are not elements such as laws and rules and principles and obligations, but is an ongoing initiation into a way of life capable of making a person good and therefore, happy. These elements are important, but they should never overshadow what ought to be the principal concern of Christian ethics: how to form us into people who love the good and seek it in everything we do. Paul Wadell re-envisions the basic elements of Christian morality in light of the conviction that the Christian moral life can be most promisingly described as "training in happiness." This book explores the place of friendship in the Christian moral life, the role of the virtues in our quest for happiness, a Christian understanding of the person, the meaning of freedom in the Christian life, and the importance of narrative for Christian ethics, including what it might mean to "put on" the story that comes to us in Jesus. Also examined are the role of conscience and prudence, its primary virtue; a Christian understanding of love; and why in the Christian life, happiness is impossible without justice.

Review
Happiness and the Christian Moral Life is a fantastic text. Yet to call this book an 'introduction' seems to diminish its depth. Wadell skillfully moves back and forth from ancient and medieval texts to contemporary insight on the nature of persons and society. In this book he addresses clearly the fundamentals of moral theology in a thoroughly 'un-textbook' fashion. Like a good storyteller, he shares these fundamentals with us - including friendship, freedom, sin, conscience, virtue, and love, in a coherent and compelling manner. (Brady, Bernard)

Paul Wadell's Happiness and the Christian Moral Life is an extraordinarily inviting treatment of the deep and expansive material of the discipline of Christian ethics. In Wadell's book the well-worn concepts and terms of Catholic moral theology are given new life, as he guides us with a friendly and gracious openness through discussions of happiness, friendship, virtue, truth, freedom, sin, conscience and justice. This is a comprehensive textbook that reads like a novel. In Wadell's competent hands, moral theology not only makes sense, it is engaging and exciting. I cannot think of a better place to begin thinking about the central questions of Christian ethics. (Charles Pinches)

It is rare to find a book one cannot wait to teach. Paul Wadell's Happiness and the Christian Moral Life is just such a book. Here the complex components of Catholic moral theology come alive through crystal clear, honest, and good-humored prose that will engage any reader, especially students. But even more delightfully, the book incarnates its claims. Wadell sees the moral life as 'training in happiness' and describes moral education as a process of 'becoming enchanted with goodness.' This book will enchant its readers, as it did me, with the beauty of the Christian journey. It is a book that imparts the joy that comes with friendship with God and those God loves. Suffused with the author's own contemplative spirituality, this book is a gift to the church, one with potential to actually change students' lives. (M. Therese Lysaught)

It is Wadell's superb study. (Books & Culture)

This is the best one volume work in fundamental moral theology now available for the widest possible audience. It represents the shift in the revision of moral theology from its focus on right actions to becoming good persons. In this theologically rich work, Wadell shows the difference the qualifier 'Christian' makes for understanding who we are, who we are to become, and how we get there. He draws from the storehouse of Christian ethics to develop his core theme of seeking happiness through virtue. Those who know Wadell’s work already appreciate the artistry of his lucid prose, rich images, and laser-like precision. This book does what all important books do—expand the conversation by giving a new slant on familiar themes. I plan to use it and recommend it as a must read for anyone who seeks to live their faith reflectively or who wants to know where fundamental moral theology is today. (Richard M. Gula, S.S.)

great basic introduction to virtue ethics
By Julie Balamut
Dr. Wadell's book is a terrific introduction to the positive, life affirming topic of Christian virtue ethics. Read this book if you really want to know how even despite sin and human weakness, God's love for us all transends the sorrows of the world. His explanations are beautifully crafted and his voice is one that brings hope to those who struggle with living the good life well. Wonderful text for beginning students of a positive, affirming view of Christian ethics. A breath of fresh air in the dankness of the usual sin, damnation, and "thou-shall-nots" of many Christian ethics texts. Bravo, Dr. Wadell, your book is full of joy!

Amazon.com Review
Scholars and fans of the great mythologist will find a rich vein of information in Humphrey Carpenter's The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien. Tolkien was a prodigious letter writer all his life; the sheer mass of his correspondence would give pause to even the most stalwart archivist (one shudders to think what he would have done with e-mail). But with the able assistance of Tolkien's son Christopher and a healthy dose of determination, Carpenter manages find the cream of the crop--the letters that shed light on Tolkien's thoughts about his academic and literary work, as well as those that show his more private side, revealing a loving husband, a playful friend, and a doting father. The most fascinating letters are, of course, those in which he discusses Middle-Earth, and Carpenter offers plenty of those to choose from. Tolkien discussed the minutia of his legend--sometimes at great length--with friends, publishers, and even fans who wrote to him with questions. These letters offer significant insights into how he went about creating the peoples and languages of Middle-Earth.

I have long ceased to invent (though even patronizing or sneering critics on the side praise my 'inventions'): I wait till I seem to know what really happened. Or till it writes itself. Thus, though I knew for years that Frodo would run into a tree-adventure somewhere far down the Great River, I had no recollection of inventing Ents. I came at last to the point, and wrote the 'Treebeard' chapter without any recollection of any previous thought: just as it is now. And then I saw that, of course, it had not happened to Frodo at all.

This new edition of letters has an extensive index, and Carpenter has included a brief blurb at the beginning of each letter to explain who the correspondent was and what was being discussed. Still, we strongly recommend buying the companion volume, J.R.R. Tolkien: A Biography, in order to better understand the place these correspondents had in Tolkien's life and get a better context for the letters. --Perry M. Atterberry

5 stars for content... 1 star for proof-reading...
By Ed
I've never been interested to read an author's personal correspondence. It's always seemed invasive and "prying," and of questionable value in locating and understanding the real sources of an author's muse. In this case though, and on the strength of other reviews, I bought the book, and am delighted to have taken the risk. It's just plain fascinating to follow the development of Tolkien's writings in his own words and thoughts, trials and setbacks, set amid all the same criteria of his larger life. An incredible read, really. Humphrey Carpenter, Tolkien's biographer, compiled this collection of personal correspondence with tact and great sensitivity and respect for J.R.R.T., and also a bulls-eye sensibility for what possible readers might find of interest.

On the Kindle version, though, 1 star at best. Typos or scan errors, whichever they are, are everywhere, and egregious. It's obvious that this Kindle text was never proofed by a human editor. To find the word "orc" misspelled as "ore" four times on one page is proof enough that the publishers put very little care into preparing the text. There are many, many other errors just in the first twenty percent of the book. I am very tempted to return this Kindle version for refund and go for the hardcopy, instead.

Especially at this time, when publishers and authors are clamoring for higher prices and consideration for their electronic books, I find myself more than ever inclined to just go back to hard-copy reading. It may be that the paper version of "The Letters..." contains the same quantity of really inexcusable errors, but that doesn't justify the glaring lack of editorial care in this Kindle version. These firms are obviously paying much, much less to produce the books, and yet still demanding to be paid even more, unfortunately actualizing Tolkien's own vision of the "machine" and where it was headed in his day.

If you are a Tolkien fan, you will love it.
By JKimball
Basically, if you are interested enough in Tolkien to be reading this review, just go ahead and buy this book. You will not regret it. I've read one of his biographies, which I thought was interesting, but this is way better and more worthwhile. Because here you get to experience Tolkien's own writing. Many of the letters shed light on the process of bringing about his work, but many of them also explain the works themselves. There is a lot of guessing going on out there about what Tolkien was thinking when he wrote his Middle Earth works. Well here we have it in his own hand. If you enjoy the humor and creativity in his books, you will enjoy it here also.
Also, if you're debating between the kindle edition and the book, I was very glad I got the kindle edition because Tolkien has a much more expansive vocabulary than I do and it was convenient to just highlight the word and see the definition.

A must for any fan of Tolkien's
By M. M. Miller
This is the book I recommend when someone has read and loved Lord of the Rings and wonders what they should read next. These letters provide some of Tolkien's thinking behind the story and world of LOTR (and his other writings) but they also provide a glimpse into the man himself. The nature of the book... a collection of letters... makes it easy to pick up and put down and one can read the letters out of order. It has an index so one can quickly find letters that deal with certain characters, places, events, etc. It's easy and enjoyable reading and I think every fan of Tolkien's writing will enjoy this book.
