Lacks coverage of new features

The product description for AWDWR4 includes this paragraph:

"Rails 4 introduces a number of user-facing changes, and the ebook has been updated to match all the latest changes and new best practices in Rails. This includes full support for Ruby 2.0, controller concerns, Russian Doll caching, strong parameters, Turbolinks, new test and bin directory layouts, and much more."

Shockingly, AWDWR4 includes no discussion of some of the aforementioned changes, including Turbolinks and strong parameters, which are the first two subjects I searched for in my copy of AWDWR4. The authors simply included a link to Turbolinks' GitHub repo, and there is literally not one mention of the term "strong parameters" in the whole book! AWDWR4 seems to be a hastily-updated version of AWDWR3, which I also own.

If you already know Rails 3, I recommend that you not waste your time or money on AWDWR4. After realizing that AWDWR4 is worthless, I bought PDF copies of Rails 4 in Action and The Rails 4 Way. (The print versions of these books are available for pre-order at Amazon.) These two books are currently in beta, but they're already over 700 pages long and they include sections devoted to strong parameters, Turbolinks, etc.

In the past, I bought Pragmatic books without bothering to evaluate them beforehand because their books had always been high-quality. This seems to no longer be the case, and I won't buy another Pragmatic book until one is recommended to me by someone I trust. Pragmatic joins O'Reilly in this regard.

Update (2014-01-22):

In response to a comment on my review, I compared the indexes in AWDWR3 and AWDWR4. What motivated me to compare the indexes was the fact that AWDWR4's index doesn't include entries for either strong parameters or Turbolinks, which is surprising for a Rails 4 book. I checked the first pages of both indexes and here's what I found:

Same number of pages. (These are the pages in AWDWR4 that should have included discussion about strong parameters.)

Good for beginners

This is the second book on Rails that I purchased to learn new features in Rails 4 (the first one being Ruby on Rails Tutorial - I bought the paper copy which covers Rails 3 but the free online version covers Rails 4). As someone relatively new to Rails, I found this book easy to follow. I tried all the sample code and it worked without any problems. The explanations accompanying code is clear for the most part. Since I already learned the Rails way of doing things in Ruby on Rails Tutorial book, the main value addition in this book for me was in Part III - Rails in Depth - a lot is discussed and several ideas tossed around for someone to use in a real project.

The main downside of this book is that some of the treatment is superficial. For example, an authentication mechanism is developed in the book which is good for illustrative purposes but it's not replaced with a relevant gem that's ready to use (such as devise). This book uses MiniTest for the most part for automated tests. In my work place MiniTest is considered to be too basic in terms of functionality/scope and therefore cucumber/rspec/capybara are used instead. This book barely mentions these gems and capybara is not mentioned at all. Another thing to note is that this book does not use TDD but develops tests as after the fact - which is not necessarily bad in itself (depending on your style of development) but something to be aware of.

If you are a beginner to Rails, you can checkout either this book or Ruby on Rails Tutorial book - both will get you started. If you have preference towards TDD, then go with Ruby on Rails Tutorial. Personally I liked the TDD style of Ruby on Rails Tutorial. I suspect that neither of these two books will be very useful to intermediate/advanced Rails developers.

A great starter for a rails noob

I have some experience for C# .net web development as a business information technology student. I'm a complete noob with practically zero knowledge of ruby and ruby on rails. Regardless I find this book very intuitive to follow, and I think if you know any object oriented language to some degree, you can pick this up and start learning ruby and rails easily at the same time.

To make the point clear, I think this book is NOT for total newbies due to the way many concepts are just thrown around without explanation, but great for those who know the basic programming concepts already and just want to read something that makes them see the big picture of rails and get started as fast as they can.

I think I won't be going back to .NET for a long time..

OK but outdated but I already knew that

This publication is the one they send when you join the Gold Prospectors Association of America (GPAA). However, they update the book every couple of years. I bought this old edition just to see what it's like. Membership in the GPAA is $80, if I remember, and it includes the latest edition of the Guide. After seeing this old edition and talking to some weekend prospector friends I joined the GPAA and got the latest edition.
I might have given this 2 stars instead of 3, but I knew it wasn't going to be real useful except to see what the current edition might be like. I wouldn't buy another copy; don't even need this one now.

Not up to date as I would have liked

Tried using this as the primary textbook for a conversational English class at church and found out that it is best used to supplement other teaching methods. Its does provide a thorough covering of conversational English but many of the words are no longer used (at least in this generation). Even the slang words were not as up to date as I would have liked but we were able to contextualize some of the phrases as being more appropriate to different age groups. In the end, I still use this to determine a topic for each week, such as "Making Friends" or "Expressing Forgiveness" but then either develop my own lessons or use many of the free ESL worksheets and activites available online.

In my view, this book can be very useful for these non-native English speakers who need to make their English more conversational and more American.Perhaps it is good to be complemented by listening experience - in the impossibility of a real conversational partner You tube, films, audio conversations may suffice.

Wonderful epic fantasy with some surprising plot twists

I have to admit, after reading the first novel in this series, The Last Whisper of the Gods, I thought I knew where everything was going. I was wrong. The Curse in the Gift takes a few of the characters in expected directions but there are some real surprises. As much as I liked The Last Whisper of the Gods, this is a better read. It’s faster paced with more action and the story is more complex. The characters develop nicely. Magic is more evident. The cliffhangers from the first book are all tied up. A new villain is introduced. The stakes become higher. If there’s a nit-pick, it’s that Berardinelli’s prose is sometimes wordy and there are a few awkward sentences. Still, compared to a lot of books I read these days (many of which come out of major publishing houses), this is as good or better. Berardinelli’s style isn’t up there with Martin or Rowling or Donaldson but he’s better than Brooks and dozens of others.

The Curse in the Gift is obviously designed to lead directly into the third book but there’s a sense of closure in the way this one ends. It doesn’t cut off at an inappropriate point. The first book is a good read but, the deeper I got into this one, the more apparent it became that The Last Whisper of the Gods was setup. This is where the meat can be found and it’s a great meal. Can’t wait to see how it all ends.

Running out of body parts.

This is actually a pretty good book. The story is good as are most of the interactions but it does have some flaws. The biggest two IMHO are the near omnipotent and omniscient antagonist (not in absolute power) but in that the worlds magic rules don't apply to him. This is problematic because the physical "cost" of using magic, the physical destruction of the casters body is the only limiting factor. While everyone else pays the cost the antagonist seems immune. The second is the need to torture the antagonist of ridiculous levels. At this point he's lost a hand, arm and leg, while the antagonist is in perfect condition. Of course this is the normal story arc but it felt done to extreme in this book. It made me want fast forward and skip to when the antagonist torture ends and the evenly matched contest begins

The chapters on Mies van der Rohe and Alvar Aalto have been brought up to date with examples of their buildings in the sixties. There is an entirely new chapter on the Danish architect Jorn Utzon, whose work, as exemplified in his design for the Sydney Opera House, Mr. Giedion considers representative of post-World War II architectural concepts.

A new essay, "Changing Notions of the City," traces the evolution of the structure of the city throughout history and examines current attempts to deal with urban growth, as shown in the work of such architects as José Luis Sert, Kenzo Tange, and Fumihiko Maki. Mr. Sert's Peabody Terrace is discussed as an example of the interlocking of the collective and individual spheres. Finally, the conclusion has been enlarged to include a survey of the limits of the organic in architecture.

A history of linear progression

This book is based on lectures Giedion gave at Harvard 1938-39. It is considered a modernist manifesto and after WW II, and well into the 1960s, it was often used in the training of architects all over the western world. European readers found the book interesting primarily because of it's section on the American history of architecture. The subtitle - The growth of a new tradition - refers to Giedion's conviction that the modern movement was the logical outcome of what he saw as a linear historical development. To make his case he gives his version of the history of architecture, and a big portion deals with the industrial era and how new technologies changed architecture and society as a whole. Giedion's all-inclusive way of reasoning was inspired by his teacher Heinrich Wölfflin. He also admired Wölfflin's mentor Jakob Burchardt. Giedion's mission is clear and he states that laissez faire mentality hinders development and that with common goals and values the world would be able to make changes for the better on a grand scale. Today the book in my view is primarily interesting as a time document and it gives insight into the modernist world of universal ideals.

A dated manifesto whose time has passed

This book is vast in its ambitions, uneven in its analysis, and badly dated in its defense of modern architecture. Giedion's basic premise is that the Industrial Revolution caused a separation to occur between thinking and feeling, this separation was exemplified by what he considers derivative architecture during the 19th century, and that it is up to the modern movement to reunite these two spheres by combining emotions with a scientific approach to architecture, and by adding the dimension of time to its three dimensional depiction of space. His historical analysis is quite erudite, but his treatment of the major architects who founded the modern movement, particularly Gropius and Le Corbusier, verges on hagiography. For instance he considers Gropius' PanAm building in New York, and Le Corbusier's Carpenter Center at Harvard to be great works of architecture, when contemporary critics view these as among their worst. The only American architect given comparable attention is Frank Lloyd Wright. The book flounders at the end in its speculation about the future, praising Le Corbusier's advocacy of separating people from cars by building elevated highways, and housing people in slablike high rise towers. Considering that Pruitt-Igoe was already, at the time of his final revision to his book, failing in St. Louis as an approach to house poor families (it was later blown to smithereens as a total disaster), this advocacy of housing people in high rises rings hollow indeed. He also advocates separating functions in a city, at a time again during his final revision, when Jane Jacobs "Death and Life of Great American Cities" was revolutionizing city planning by advocating just the opposite. It is worth reading because it makes you think, but it is badly dated.

Excellent history

I enjoyed this book for the author's insights into how 20th century architecture, starting from certain antecedents in the 19th century, such as the early iron-reinforced concrete structures of William LeBaron Jenny, progressed through Louis Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright, the Bauhaus school, and so on, up to the style which he calls "the hanging curtain of glass."
Giedion shows how this spectacular 20th-century building originated around the turn of the last century and how it's modern variations represent a triumpth of this type of design.
The basic principle, as exemplified early on in the Carson, Pirie, Scott, and Co. building in Chicago, is that as stuctural members receeded from the outlying masonry walls into the interior skeleton of the building, this allows the architect to open up the facade with windows, skylights, and other penetrating elements in order to let the maximum amount of air and light into the building. Eventually no real supporting structural members need reside on the outside of the building, and the aesthetic result is the "hanging curtain of glass" effect... Whatever one thinks of this type of building, it has become a major landmark of 20th-century architectural design in cities all over the world.
Giedion's treatment of Robert Maillart's graceful, parabolic spanning bridge designs in the Swiss Alps and some other places, such as the Tavanasa Bridge in the U.S., which he specifically discusses as one of Maillart's most important achievements, is also very interesting.
Overall, Giedion's book is a fine treatment of an important and difficult period in the history of architecture, and is one of the most important books on architecture to be written in recent decades.

Classic everyday poetry

I marvel that a man wrote so many poems about the pedestrian, but nonetheless important things in life. Where is our current "people's poet"? In another time and place I hope shake this man's hand. Immersing myself in this poetry is at once refreshing and induces a bit of nostalgia for a time in American culture I never lived through when old fashion decency and simple living were much more common and popular. Edgar Guest was very prolific and I have collected a few old books of his writings that I consider treasures. My young children enjoy hearing me read it to them. It is simple poetry to understand, yet evokes penetrating introspection, and for me at least, gets my mind off of the bothersome nonsensical matters of the current age that I feel powerless to do anything about. These verses remind me that what matters most is the quality of the inner character and would that all people could just take this wholesomeness with us.

I have grown up on the poems of this tiny volume... And having now moved out on my own, and starting to build my own library, began to look for this great book.... And nothing would do but the same edition that I knew so well. I was most pleased to find it here in such good shape. The description was accurate, and shipping prompt. The book is in great shape considering its age... Published in1923 and inscripted from Christmas 1925... I am most satisfied with my purchase!!

Powerful work on finding your life's purpose and developing a path to mastery

This is an extremely powerful work on how to achieve mastery in one's life. Mastery can be thought of as the unique way each of us can fully actualize our potential for greatness and enjoy a fulfilling life.

Achieving Mastery in life is a lot of work but it is the way to a flourishing life (a life of self-fulfillment). Spinoza's quote "All things excellent are as difficult as they are rare" came to mind several times as I read the book. The author provides ideas and strategies that can improve the process for those willing to expend the effort. I plan to re-read and work with the ideas and strategies covered in this book and apply them to my personal context. I also plan to purchase copies of the book for my wife and 2 teenage sons so they can benefit from this material as well.

The work begins by discussing how to discover one's purpose in life. This is unique to each individual and needs to be well thought through. The author gives 5 strategies for finding your life's task and illustrates these strategies with historical and contemporary figures. Two of the strategies he discusses that really gave me a lot to think about are:
1. ) Occupy the perfect niche - the Darwinian strategy. In this strategy you need to find the career niche that best fits your interests and talents and then evolve that niche over time. I found the eaxample of V.S. Ramachandran very interesting
2.) Let go of the past - the adaptation strategy. The following quote from this section that really resonated with me:
"You must adapt your Life's Task to these circumstances. You do not hold on to past ways of doing things, because it will ensure you will fall behind and suffer for it. You are flexible and looking to adapt."

The author then covers the Apprentice Phase which he breaks into 3 steps:
1.) Deep Observation - the Passive Mode
2.) Skills Acquisition - the Practice Mode
3.) Experimentation - The Active Mode

There are detailed strategies for completing the ideal appenticeship. These are illustrated by examples. 2 of my favorites in this section were "move toward resistance and pain" as illustrated by the example of Bill Bradley and "apprentice yourself in failure" as illustrated by Henry Ford. All 8 strategies are worth thinking about in detail.

The next section covers learning through a Mentor and is one of the best parts of the book. The example of Michael Faraday is used as a great illustration. There are strategies discussed for finding the appropriate mentor(s), knowing when to break away from the mentor and what to do if you cannot find a mentor (the example here is Thomas Edison and there is an interesting tie-back to Faraday). Having a mentor is the most effective way to gain deep knowledge of a field in the least amount of time - it greatly accelerates that path to Mastery.

The next section deals with social intelligence and seeing people as they are. Benjamin Franklin is used as an example. There are 7 deadly realities covered in this section (envy, conformism, rigidity, self-obsessiveness, laziness, flightiness and passive aggression) as well as strategies for acquiring social intelligence.

The fifth section is on awakening the dimensional mind. This is where you see more and more aspects of reality and develop ways to become more creative (and not get stuck in the past). There are several strategies on creativity discussed in detail. I found the discussion on ways to alter one's perspective especially illuminating. These include avoiding:
* Looking at the "what" instead of the "how"
* Rushing to generalities and ignoring details
* Confirming paradigms and ignoring anomalies - (key quote: "...anomalies themselves contain the richest information. They often reveal to us the flaws in our paradigms and open up new ways of looking at the world")
* fixating on what is present, ignoring what is absent (Sherlock Holmes example)

The section continues with strategies and examples for this "creative-active" phase. My favorite was a section on Mechanical Intelligence with the Wright Brothers as an example.

The Final Section is on Mastery as the fusing of the Intuitive with the Rational. The strategies in this section are very powerful and I will be returning to them again and again. Here are the 7 strategies:
1.) Connect to your environment
2.) Play to your strengths (this is very important - see further thoughts on this below)
3.) Transform yourself through practice
4.) Internalize the details - the life force (Leonardo Da Vinci example)
5.) Widen your vision

This is a very powerful book filled with a lot of good ideas and strategies. There are ideas I plan to continue to "chew" on and think more deeply about while I work to integrate these ideas and strategies into my personal context.

A lot of the book stresses the importance of self-discipline, persevering through difficult challenges, the importance of an adaptive and active mind, independent thinking and integrating all of one's knowledge. Here are a few recommendations I would make to augment the material covered in this book:

Felt something was missing.

The stories that Green told about the history of the different personalities was interesting, but after I read this I felt a void and forgot what the main idea was. There was nothing that really helped the reader tap into their own soul reading this and say "Oh now I get it." I was hoping this book would help one tune in and help them find their calling or be so inspired by the stories in here that it would get them going in the right direction. This book did not do that for me.

Unlike his previous books, especially the Art of Seduction, this was not a real page- turner and one of those books that you can't put down. I felt some of the things Greene tried to discuss and interpret were a bit outside of his wheelhouse. Perhaps this can explain why this book wasn't as fascinating as some of his others. Maybe because now that he is ridiculously wealthy -maybe he is more lackluster about putting a lot of time and effort in his new releases-I don't know.

One thing that was really appalling and a turn off was at the end of the book he thanked that quackof an author of The Game-Neil Struass. I had to read it over numerous times, I couldn't believe it. A brilliant well-written author like Greene thanking Neil, a guy who knows nothing about women or The Game, and rubbing elbows with him is mind boggling. Is Greene trying to lose value and sabotage his credibility by thanking this moron Strauss-despite The Game being a best seller. Come on Greene you're a smart guy what are you thinking? Surely Neil didn't give you advice for the Art of Seduction. I wonder about their association.

Nevertheless surely a decent read for anyone, especially Greene's admirers of his other works, but if you think this book will open up your heart and eyes to your true calling-think again. I wish Greene would do another Art of Seduction part II or another fascinating topic.

The Master Delivers

There are countless self-help books--some good, some trite. Then there are self-help books that revolutionize the genre.

Robert Greene's Mastery is such a book. It's Greene's fifth book broadly tackling the art of strategy, and like all his books, it's entertaining, educational, densely packed with biographies of powerful and interesting people, and almost completely devoid of fluff.

Greene's overarching thesis challenges the conventional notion of "genius" as a genetic gift bestowed upon a handful of individuals--Mozart and Einstein immediately come to mind. To Greene, such a conception of genius is illusory. All "genius," Greene contends, is acquirable, and all masters, regardless of intrinsic ability, go through roughly the same process on their path towards mastery:

1) Finding your Life's Task. Greene argues that there's an inner force that guides you towards what you're "destined" to accomplish. Once you discover your Life's Task, throw everything at it.

2) Finding an ideal apprenticeship--the time when you hone the necessary skills and acquire the discipline vital to mastery.

3) Finding the right mentor. This is the key to a fruitful apprenticeship, enabling you to absorb the master's knowledge and power. Greene cautions that you must know when it's time to sever ties with your mentor and craft your own path in order to prevent remaining in your mentor's shadow indefinitely. The goal, Greene advises, it to eventually surpass your mentor.

4) Acquiring social intelligence. Social intelligence is an important theme in all of Greene's books. Quite simply, our personal and professional advancement will invariably stall if we don't learn to read people and deftly maneuver through the labyrinth of others' whims, passions, and ambitions.

5) "Awaken the Dimensional Mind: The Creative-Active." This stage involves expanding your knowledge to fields related to your craft, thereby challenging you to "make new associations between different ideas." Greene believes this is a critical step to optimizing your creative output and achieving mastery.

6) Fusing the intuitive with the rational. Greene argues that Einstein's discoveries can be as much attributed to his intuition as to his mathematical analysis grounded in pure reason. Practice and intimate knowledge of our field foster the integration of intuition with reason.

For each stage, Greene outlines concrete steps to take to achieve these goals, including approaching difficult problems from unconventional angles or altering your perspective, embracing the holistic approach--i.e. utilizing and synchronizing the full range of resources and options your environment has to offer.

One of the features that distinguishes Mastery from Greene's two other masterpieces, 33 Strategies of War and 48 Laws of Power, is its greater focus on the biographies of contemporary masters, most of whom are not well known to the general public. Greene delves into the lives of legendary masters like Mozart, Einstein, Goethe, Darwin, and da Vinci, but also of lesser known contemporary masters like software engineer and entrepreneur Paul Graham, animal scientist and inventor Temple Grandin, and linguistic archaeologist Daniel Everett, who cracked the previously thought to be indecipherable language of the reclusive Amazonian tribe, Piraha.

Linking the human capacity for mastery to our biology and indeed, metaphysics, Greene writes in a veritably spiritual manner, making Mastery highly compelling and exceedingly motivational.

The title Mastery is fitting, since Greene is undoubtedly a master in the art of strategy. It is amusing to hear some of his detractors bemoan the "amoral" nature of his books. Amoral virtues--be it courage, prudence, or temperament--are indispensable to achieving moral ends. A strategically inept well-meaning person will likely fail to achieve any significant good, because he is ill-prepared to deal with endless obstacles that stand in his way. Whereas a person well versed in the art of strategy and equipped with the amoral virtues necessary to overcome such obstacles, has the potential to achieve noble ends.

The one area where I could quibble with Greene has to do with the age old debate over the role of nature vs. nurture. Since genetic makeup is a fixed variable outside of our control, it is perhaps pointless to dwell on its role in our development when writing a book about the concrete things we can actually do to better ourselves. Still, I wonder if Greene's unequivocal dismissal of the traditional interpretation of genius as inherent isn't to some extent mistaken. Regardless of how many thousands of hours Mozart spent studying his craft, is it really conceivable that any person of sound mind and body could replicate his success?

I tend to think that there is something to be said about intrinsic genius; that there are masters who are born with an uncanny and natural ability to perceive things others do not and cannot, no matter how hard they try. Nevertheless, even if Greene errors in downplaying the role DNA plays in cultivating "genius," it in no way diminishes his strategy for acquiring mastery. Whether all of us can become the Einstein in our field makes little difference. What matters is that we can reach our maximum potential--become men and women in full--by following Greene's blueprint.
