"The Sporting Game" by the same author was a blockbuster. It described how Boeing gambled its net worth on developing a completely new and revolutionary airliner, the 747. After a rocky few years, this became a great commercial success, vindicating the daring gamble.
The new book, "Boeing Versus Airbus," describes an equally primal contest for survival, and the diametrically opposite strategies pursued by Boeing and Airbus. Unfortunately, the book is neither as well-written nor as well-edited as the first book, repetitive and full of opinions that don't always stand the test of time. Think of the book as a collection of articles, put into one set of covers. If you are or were involved in this industry (as I was) it's still a good read -- but more like a magazine article than the coherent book I had anticipated.

Interesting

I bought this book as an assignment to fill an independent study credit for my undergard Business degree. My professor knew I had a job at Boeing after I graduated so he assigned me something relevant to my future career. This book presents the facts of the 787 vs A380 without bias that I could tell. It presents some pretty interesting information about both companies. Although its not a page turner (most non-fiction books aren't), it is very interesting.

Art Markman, PhD, is one of the premier cognitive scientists in the field. He has been on the faculty at the University of Texas since 1998, where he is the Annabel Irion Worsham Centennial Professor of Psychology and Marketing and director of the program in the Human Dimensions of Organizations at University of Texas. Markman has published over 150 scholarly works on topics including analogical reasoning, categorization, decision making, and motivation. Additionally, he is a member of the medical advisory board of the Dr. Oz Show and on the scientific advisory board of Dr. Phil.

Robert Duke, PhD, is the Marlene and Morton Meyerson Centennial Professor and Head of Music and Human Learning at University of Texas at Austin. A University Distinguished Teaching Professor, Elizabeth Shatto Massey Distinguished Fellow in Teacher Education, and Director of the Center for Music Learning, he is also director of the program in psychology of learning at Colburn Conservatory in Los Angeles. Really enjoyed this book. It was easy to read and each chapter is a subject unto it self. I have re-read some chapters more than once. It is very readable-yet the science is there to back up the research.

This book raises eyebrows

The author says that he wants to write a definitive textbook about Information Systems; and also says that the book is for serious students. Wow. In a field where one can find hundreds (if not thousands and tens of thousands) of books bearing these two words information systems in their titles, this is quite a claim (even if one ignores the obvious question about the many IS textbooks being used today: are they for serious students?) Well, I agree with the author. Folks who are searching for a book with it to study IS for real can stop the search right here and now.

This book builds IS around a powerful concept: the connection of people and resources for innovation. It uses the notion of human value networks to substantiate the usual ideas of connection and innovation - and give these otherwise platitudinous words uniquely refreshing content. On this basis, the other two common words, people and resources, become naturally the objects and subjects of design for building the connections and pursuing the innovations - i.e., the design of information systems. From here, the book develops the basic concept of IS (covering both application and scientific), the stragetic planning of IS, and the system analysis and database design of IS; which are standard topics to the IS field. However, the twist here is that, while meeting the standard requirements of IS courses, it develops these traditional topics in an interesting new global framework characterized by systems of IS and sustainability of IS. The book also combines the emerging network science and service science to explain how IS connects and innovates for the knowledge-based economies. The last chapter connects the science of IS to micro-economics with an anchor in production functions. Every chapter includes many exercises and cases throughout, which add considerable value to the book for the reader, and make it a textbook suitable for self-study as well as for classroom teaching.

Just as I discussed in the behind the scenes of Caught by the Blizzard, I wanted to challenge what readers think of the main characters. Do we, as readers, always have to like the protagonists? Aren't some of the most interesting characters in movies and books the ones we kind of hate? For me, and I know for a lot of you out there, Liz certainly checks those boxes!
And then there's Bryan...who can't love Bryan??

This was the second book to "Caught by the Blizzard" I was hooked from the first book and had to know what happened between Bryan and Liz. I was disappointed in Liz's actions but from the start, I guess she stayed true to herself. She was too easy going. I wanted her to see who her real friends were and wake up. Thankfully Bryan never gave up and always looked out for her best interest. For Steve's character, I thought in the real world, he would have never waited as long as he did for Liz. Liked the first book better! Overall, the book kept my interest and I will look for more of Adele Huxley's books.

Starred Review. Shakespeare's legendary tragedy is revisited in this spirited and entertaining production that ran in London from November 2007 to February 2008. The flawless, talented cast features Ewan McGregor as the conniving Iago, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Othello (whose performance won him the Olivier Award as best actor) and Kelly Reilly as Desdemona. There is also excellent support from Tom Hiddleston (as Cassio) and Michelle Fairley (as Emilia). This audio production is a rousing, theatrical performance expertly guided by director Michael Grandage. Complete with a musical score as well as full sound effects and background noises, listening is so enjoyable that the play speeds by at breakneck pace. An enclosed booklet contains color photographs of the production and a well-written essay by drama professor Russell Jackson. There's also an entertaining bonus DVD disc featuring interviews with the cast and crew. Brilliantly produced in all departments, listening is the next best thing to seeing it live. (July)

Shakespeare's most domestic tragedy is an exceedingly complex journey through jealousy, self-doubt, inadequacies, and societal acceptance. This impressive audio is a version of a London theatrical performance featuring McGregor as Iago, Chiwetel Ejiofor in the role of Othello, and Kelly Reilly playing Desdemona. In a studio recording session, the actors “reproduced as closely as possible the stage production.” Authentic sound effects and background music further enhance the presentation. Experiencing a play aurally is different than viewing a stage performance, and sometimes it is difficult to distinguish between the voices in the predominantly male cast. Nevertheless, this is an excellent vehicle for introducing the classic tragedy to students and Shakespeare fans. An accompanying DVD includes interviews with cast members. Their discussions of the characters, analyses of motivations, and decisions on delivering lines are thoughtfully presented. These fascinating commentaries add immeasurably to listeners’ comprehension of the play and the acting process. --Barbara Baskin

No annotations on each page

My problem with the Kindle Bantam Classic edition of Othello is that there are no footnotes at the bottom of each page. This means no immediate vocab definitions or comprehension aids. I bought the Kindle edition because my old Signet paperback Othello is yellow with age, plus tiny font. (I'm rereading Othello before watching the live performance starring Blair Underwood and Richard Thomas.) Not being a scholar of Elizabethan English, I do need annotative help with the vocab and idioms. So unfortunately, it's back to the old, barely readable but annotated Signet print version for me.

Great play, great electronic version

Othello was one of the first plays I was exposed to when I was younger. It has murder, suicide, intrigue and things that would get a teenager into Shakespeare.

I've had mixed success with some of the free Kindle versions of Shakespeare. Some have been good, some have been awful. This is an exceptional version. It's formatted nicely and is easy to read. The only "lack" is that it is without line numbers, so if you were to use this for academic reasons, you might have an issue or two.

Thus far, Othello's my favorite free Shakespeare play. I missed how much of a jerk Iago was, and all the deception that lead to Othello killing Desdemona.

A Less Well-Known, Still Enjoyable, Shakespearean Drama

This is a Shakespearean Comedy of Manners from before the genre was even really a fully developed thing, featuring love affairs, a revenge plot, some humorous incompetence, a faked death, and much more. I'm not a big comedy fan, but this is certainly a good example of the genre at the time from which it came, and I actually quite enjoyed it. When it comes to the works of Shakespeare as a whole, I would say that this is a less memorable example, but definitely has some positives going for it as well. For one, it's far less well-known than many of his more famous works, so it doesn't feel familiar as you read it. The characters and plot also tend to grow on you, even as the language isn't quite so memorable, and the plotting and mistaken identities aspects are always good plot points, whether you're speaking of today or centuries ago. As to the edition itself, I found it to be greatly helpful in understanding the action in the play. It has a layout which places each page of the play opposite a page of notes, definitions, explanations, and other things needed to understand that page more thoroughly. While I didn't always need it, I was certainly glad to have it whenever I ran into a turn of language that was unfamiliar, and I definitely appreciated the scene-by-scene summaries. Really, if you want to or need to read Shakespeare, an edition such as this is really the way to go, especially until you get more accustomed to it.
