Great explanations + access to 3 practice exams (plus you don't have to deal with Salty - the condescending kracker)

I took the first administration of the new MCAT on April 17th, 2015. To prepare I read all 7 of the Kaplan books, supplemented with Khan Academy, and I felt very prepared for the exam. Yes, there were some concepts in the Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior section that I felt Kaplan did not cover. However to be honest, these concepts were also not explicitly mentioned on the AAMC outline.

PROS:
-They connect all the concepts and give tips, examples, mnemonics, and connections throughout all the books. There is quite a bit of reading to get through the books, but hey, the entire MCAT is testing your reading comprehension so you may as well get good at it. Connecting all these concepts really helped me see the bigger picture of what this test is about.

-Emphasis on key topics that were tested on and repetition of these concepts again and again and again.

-Simplified explanations (read below for Exam Kracker comparison): When you get a question wrong, it's nice to not only know the right answer but to also know why the answer you chose is wrong. Kaplan’s explanations help you identify your weaker areas and it also teaches you how to strategize. For a majority of the questions encountered on the MCAT, you’ll need to identify the "most correct" answer from other answers that are also correct. This is not only knowledge-driven but strategy-driven as well. If you don’t understand why you’re missing questions, then you won’t be able to improve your score. Kaplan has the best and most simplified explanations and I think this was the biggest contributor in my practice test score improvements.

-Buying the books gives you access to an online portion of materials that includes 3 practice exams, and two "mini" passage tests per topic. These practice exams were EXTREMELY helpful. In my opinion, they were more accurate than the aamc practice exam to the real test.

Comparison to Exam Krackers books: I took the old MCAT about a year prior to taking the new test and studied from Exam Krackers, using a bit of Princeton Review on the side. My biggest issue with EK books were that they did not connect the concepts in a manner that helped me understand or remember the material better. Most of my time studying was spent trying to decipher the explanations given for the practice passages. And when I say decipher, I mean that the explanations are so vague I would end up spending countless hours trying to learn the concepts at a "deeper conceptual level", when really my issue was that frankly I just sucked at eliminating wrong answers and making educated guesses. These are skills that improved tremendously when I used the Kaplan books for the new MCAT.

I was able to borrow the new Exam Kracker books from a friend two weeks prior to taking the new MCAT as last minute practice after utilizing all of the Kaplan and Khan materials. I only did the passages in the Bio I (Biochem) and Psych books. Comparatively, the passages provided in the Bio I EK book were no better than those provided from Kaplan, and once again the explanations were vague. For the last four passages in the EK Pysch book, I felt the answers were extremely subjective and absolutely ridiculous. As well, the EK Psych book is less than half the size of the Kaplan equivalent (much less material and explanation). And of course the stupid mascot of EK- "salty the condescending kracker" is on every other page making pointless, condescending comments.

Bottom line: Kaplan books rocked. I felt well prepared (in combination with Khan Academy) and I had access to 3 practice exams at less cost than other prep companies.

Also, please note that the most critical review (thus far) of these books is an MCAT instructor paid to teach from Exam Krackers materials. I am a student. I have studied from both Exam Krackers and Kaplan and have taken both the old and new MCATs. Please ask if you have any questions about the prep material.

Worth every penny!

I was very hesitant about my potential performance on the MCAT prior to owning and using these books. I'm 30 pages into the General Chemistry book, and I can honestly say my confidence is now up to par. After skimming through the rest of the books, I will say that they are laid out perfectly. Not too wordy, and gets right to the point. I have never owned or used Kaplan products, but after using this series, I will recommend it to anyone. The price ~$150 is extremely cheap when compared to MCAT courses that can run up to almost $10,000 for a summer course. If you can manage your time, and genuinely want to study, this is all you need!

Just took my Mcat 2015

Just took my mcat on April 18th 2015. I would recommend the Kaplan series with the exception of the Psych/Sociology Book. It lacked a lot of information that showed up in my Mcat. Thank god I had some background (I was a psych minor and took a general sociology class) or I would have been sweating through out the section. Definitely outsource for a different psych/sociology book.

Ideal as a supplement for school art history and art appreciation curriculums and classes

Readers old and young will enjoy Pamela Geiger Stephen's humorous, lighthearted, but informative approach which combines Jim McNeill's deft illustrations with actual art images from the work of Pablo Picasso. As Picasso's masterworks are presented and explored, the characters in this lively picture book pose open-ended questions that will prompt the reader to make his or her own critical analyses and interpretations of these seminal works of art. Indeed, it's finding out that Picasso's artwork continues to pose answered questions is a major part of the attraction of this unique approach to art instruction for young (and not-so-young!) readers. Also very highly recommended is the Crystal Productions VHS video tape format of Dropping In On Picasso that has Puffer dropping in on Pablo Picasso in an animated approach that combines sequences with details and full-screen images of the artwork. This superbly produced video is accompanied by a guide with suggested activities, making it ideal as a supplement for school art history and art appreciation curriculums and classes.

About the Author
Dr. Prakash Reddy is currently active in research and teaching at the Missouri University of Science and Technology. He has received his Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, and M.Phil. from the University of Hyderabad, India. He was an Adjunct and Visiting Professor at nationally reputed universities prior to joining Missouri University of Science and Technology in 2000. At one time, the worldwide fame of the ruins at Baalbek drew huge numbers of tourist crowds. In the present day, a trip to Baalbek is extremely difficult and considerably dangerous. The massive multi-level platform found at Baalbek, is believed by some scientists to be one of the "only" prediluvial sites that survived the flood. At a much later time, it became very well known to the Romans, who desecrated the site to build their magnificent temples. In fact, the largest Roman temples ever built were not in Rome, but were found at Baalbek.

One of the most puzzling aspects of the ruins at Baalbek are the 1,000-plus ton stones which formed part of the original temple platform. A recent visit to the site allowed inspection of these large stones, and of the one at the quarry (pictured on the cover), where new measurements were taken which revealed the largest and most precisely cut stone at the Trilithon may weigh in at over 1,500 tons. The largest modern cranes in the world would have difficulty in lifting, let alone moving, these massive limestone blocks, and yet there they sit. These stones, and many other aspects of this important historical site are described at length in this handy reference guide.

ONE OF THE GREATEST UNRESOLVED MYSTERIES IN MODERN ARCHAEOLOGY

Why isn't Baalbek better known to the modern world? Why is it not among the "Seven Wonders of the World?" Regrettably this single book is the only one that has ever been written about this remarkable, anomalous-archaeological site. The author was the curator of Baalbek at the beginning of the last century. Though we should feel a sense of gratitude for his effort in recording such an important understanding of the details at this site, this book has become somewhat outdated and sorely needs modern input. Who is up to the challenge? Until someone manages to come forward, do the research and write a new book about the stones of Baalbek, sadly the enigma will remain unresolved and not well known to modern societies.

Exceptional information from a first rate source. Quotes biblical references to compare to his information of the culture. It was very helpful to read the measurements and path to certain locations mentioned in the Bible, but no specifics. Fascinating-a must have for serious Bible readers.

A historical document

Even though this book was intended to be a tourist guide, it can now be considered a historical document. First written in 1890 and updated several times, the last being in 1935, the book describes the famous Lebanese city of Baalbek during that period.
Michel Alouf, a Greek Catholic from Baalbek, was also a skilled archeologist whose work is one of a kind. More important than the archeological description of the Baalbek ruins, is the rare description of the city of Baalbek during the early twentieth century. One would be surprised to learn that this city, today predominantly inhabited by Shiites, once had a considerable Christian minority.
Alouf also did his best in trying to trace the origins of the name of Baalbek, known as Heliopolis to the Greeks and Romans. He summarizes historic sources that mention the city and describe it.
Today on bookstore shelves, one cannot find such works on such a historically remarkable place. All works on Baalbek focus on the political situation of the city ever since it was dominated by the Hezbollah group. However, this book describes the topography, architecture and socioeconomic situation of Baalbek and its surrounding villages at the time, albeit briefly. A reader cannot but notice how Baalbek, now a hotbed of Shiite radicals, was once a marvelous work of architecture, art and science.
The book is in its 24th edition.

A good primer for the newly graduated Engineer or individuals just trying to increase their knowledge. Easy to read and current. The sections on Multi-layer leaves many unanswered questions which leaves one wanting more information than is provided.

Needs a good editor...

This book needs a whole lot of serious editing. I was a trifle miffed by the poor grammer throughout the book, poor spelling, typographic errors in places and generally poor presentation.
The book also has sections which seem totally out of place. There is a chapter on electronic components which seems to be totally random. Maybe the author had a spare book chapter lying around on his desk and decided to put it in, maybe he got his filing mixed up and accidentally sent another book's chapter to the publisher...
Overall I'm not impressed.

A follow up to Next of Kin, a book I thought was a really good. However I found this short story written from the Kane's mother POV, pointless and trite.

Disjointed, boring, can't be read as a standalone short story.

Didn't like it at all. Even though it was part of a series, I thought like the Oregon stories it would be possible to read it as a standalone short story.

However, most of the book was about one character's mother Sophie, and instead of any resolution to the Sophie arc, the book mysteriously ends on a scene between two other characters. It was like a 'to be continued' episode from a TV show.

Add to that, that the writing was wooden and the mother was one-dimensional and cliche. It wasn't what I've come to expect from Jae.

I think it should be clear that you can't read it on it's own - even though it didn't cost a lot, I wish I could have my money back, I felt cheated.

Perfect epilogue to that storyline but....I wanted more!!!!! It was just too good to be so short!!!! Loved the whole storyline. Wouldn't mind reading more about these characters or just seeing them pop up in further novels!!

wonderful for contemplating Sophocles' great creation

I highly recommend this fascinating discussion of Oedipus Tyrannus - a book that can be read over and over with continuing interest. Every time I experience one of Segal's chapters, I come away with new thoughts. The historical/cultural setting is well described, and the intricacies of this extremely complex masterwork are discussed with enlightening insight. If you love the Oedipus Tyrannus, get this book!
