Conrad Fischer, MD, is director of the residency program at Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center in New York City. Dr. Fischer also teaches USMLE® Steps 1, 2, and 3, Internal Medicine Board Review and Attending Recertification, and USMLE® Step 1 Physiology.Dr. Fischer is associate professor of physiology, pharmacology, and medicine at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine in New York City.

Arthur Prancan, PhD, is course director of the Pharmacology program at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine in New York City, where he also serves as interim preclinical dean and biomedical MS program director. He is the former course director in pharmacology at Rush Medical College in Chicago, where he led its highly successful summer pharmacology course for 18 years.

Great way to test your knowledge before Step 1. I found myself flipping through pages of the First Aid telling myself I knew it instead of actually testing myself. These flashcards were a good way to do that and worth it.

Wall Street is no longer the old-fashioned business it once was. In recent years, investment banks and hedge funds have increasingly turned to quantitative trading strategies and derivative securities for their profits, and have raided academia for PhDs to model these volatile products and manage their risk. Nowadays, the fortunes of firms and the stability of markets often rest on mathematical models. "Quants"–the scientifically trained practitioners of quantitative finance who build these models–have become key players on the Wall Street stage.

And no Wall Street quant is better known than Emanuel Derman. One of the first high-energy particle physicists to migrate to Wall Street, he spent seventeen years in the business, eventually becoming managing director and head of the renowned Quantitative Strategies group at Goldman, Sachs & Co. There he coauthored some of today’s most widely used and influential financial models.

Physics and quantitative finance look deceptively similar. But, writes Derman, "When you do physics you’re playing against God; in finance, you’re playing against God’s creatures." The Human Side of Quantitative Finance -- Great Read!

The book commences with a history of physics that is reminiscent of "The Elegant Universe" by Brian Greene. From Newton to Maxwell to Einstein and beyond, Derman discovers the great theories of yesterday and finds himself in the middle of a seven year marathon to a PhD and the launch of his academic career.

The struggle for intellectual purity and the distain for applied work abound in Derman's academic environment and the pressures of achieving greatness are pronounced in a place where genius is a commodity.

In a leap of faith, Derman decides to return to New York to spend more time with his family and to surrender to what he considered a less dignified job.

Lost in the Dilbert-esque hierarchies of the Bell Labs, Derman discovers the joy of programming, while submerged in office politics. After numerous attempts of beating the currents, Derman finally reaches the shores of Wall Street and is relieved to find an avant-garde environment, where meritocracy is no longer a foreign word.

The initial period of awakening takes place at Goldman Sachs, where he is mentored by Fischer Black, one of the great financial practitioners of our time. Derman is immediately impressed by Black's pragmatic style and intuitive quest for simplicity.

Black's influence becomes evident in the lucid and accessible description of the famous Black-Derman-Toy interest rate model and the subsequent elaborations on local volatility models that are at the foundation of more exotic instruments (which cannot be accurately priced using the overly simplistic implied volatility provided by the Black-Scholes-Merton model).

The author discusses the process of deriving original models and emphasizes that the elegant stochastic calculus derivations of these models are deceptively simple and make it difficult for students to fully appreciate the amount of effort that went into developing the initial embodiments -- what seems obvious now was once heavily debated.

Armed with the recently acquired knowledge, Derman accepts a new challenge at Salomon Brothers, doubling his compensation in the process. Unfortunately, the unhealthy competitiveness at Salomon forces him to reconsider quickly and he returns to Goldman after an undeserved layoff. The roundtrip allows Derman to develop an appreciation for the collaborative environment at Goldman.

Throughout the book, the interactions with family members, professors, bosses, traders, programmers and sales people are both amusing and enlightening. Derman succeeds in blending physics, finance, and human emotion in this masterful and entertaining autobiography.

An interesting career path

This book is not for those interested in learning quantitative finance. Rather, it is a memoir written by a physicist who came to finance relatively late in life.

There is some poignancy in Derman's transformation from theoretical physicist bent on a life in academia (where he hoped to make groundbreaking discoveries about elementary particles) to mid-level employee of one of the world's great financial institutions (Goldman Sachs). Although he was undoubtedly well paid for the skills he brought to the financial markets, Derman's story is tinged with sadness about the loss of an ideal.

The book is particularly valuable for the insights it provides about the inner workings of a major investment bank, and in particular about the role played by the "quants" in the development of new products and trading strategies. It also provides some perspective on the development of quantitative finance as a practical discipline; and it makes clear that quantitative skills, while important to a successful career in a major financial institution, generally take a back seat to salesmanship, practical trading skills, and internal politicking.

Those with a liking for pure mathematics will have to grin and bear Derman's critical comments about mathematical rigor and economic theory.

Not really what I expected...

It was an interesting read but not what I expected.

It is my own fault. I bought it because the title (Physics and Finance) caught my eye and the average rating and number of reviews was high. I would guess it is not a heavily embellished memoir. Emanuel appears to be an honest, practical and educated individual. I found myself in the beginning wondering when I would start to read something about his life as a Quant. I don't know the exact page but I was probably half way through the book before I got my first taste.

In the end I found it like most things I have not personally experienced, it is more romantic to dream than live. This is not to say he didn't do good things. It just means for every minute of success and enjoyment there are hundreds if not thousands of minutes of grind and perseverance. The grind is not always so well documented.

Due to my age, I did find myself identifying with Emanuel as he changed from a wide eyed youth ready to change the world to a more pragmatic successful adult. I still envy the enthusiasm lack of experience provides younger people.

I wouldn't recommend it to someone looking for insights in to physics or finance. I would recommend it to someone is in the field or aspires to be in the field.

Pick a different book

This book is terrible. The book has numerous errors and is filled with awkward text. If your professor requires this book for a class then he or she probably has an economic or professional interest in the book. At a minimum, the learning process is hampered by this book. With that said, my copy is for sale on Amazon.

2012 edit...the book didn't sell. After may years I now feel comfortable in saying that the author was my professor. He couldn't speak English and he didn't know economics from a bankrupt hole in the ground. I cringe at the fact that he signed my graduate degree diploma; which, is framed and hanging in my dining room.

The book is no longer for sale, but my comment needs to remain. Although I can't burn or dispose of a book for ethical reasons, I also can't subject anyone else to it. What a dilemma. Not to mention the guy who sold it to me said that I can't feed it after midnight and it can't get wet. Screw it. I'm throwing this thing out the next time I set eyes on it.

Taha an extraordinary renovator of Islamic thinking

This is an excellent, well written, and well document book about a leading though largely ignored in the West, modern Arab thinker in Islam. The book's title captures Mahmoud Taha's quest for the absolute. Though his writings reflect a high level of thought it nonetheless is firmly rooted in everyday's reality. His balance between mystic and pragmatic an political thought makes him unique among modern thinkers.

The author, M. Mahmoud has dug very deep in Taha's writings and provides a critical balance between an account of such thinking and an evaluation of Taha's thought. His vast knowledge of Islamic thought is a major asset in tracing back the various influences that have affected or impacted Taha's thought.

I believe this book is a must to have and read for anyone interested in the lively debates in modern Islamic thought.

A Must Read For Today's Society

An absolute must read, predicting what we are now seeing 40 years later. Yudkin's research on sugar and Mary G. Enig's research on fats have turned common nutrition wisdom upside down. I have done the traditional low fat, high carb method of eating and had horrible triglyceride and cholesterol levels. Switched to more saturated fats and fewer sugars, and my levels went way down, contrary to what my physician thought would happen. I see this in my daily life at the office: co-workers eating all the refined sugary treats and constantly complaining that they are fat or sick, or both. I refrain most of the time, and am not fat, nor do I get sick (unless my son sneezes on me). Change your eating style, don't believe the B.S. media and the government says will make you healthy, and you'll see the difference.

A Must Read

I ordered this book after reading an online NY Times Magazine article entitled "Is Sugar Toxic", and I plan to order several more copies to give to the people I love. This book traces the history of sugar, how sugar is refined, and the many effects it has on body chemistry. Because of my family medical history, of particular interest to me is the connection between sugar and coronary disease, since most of us are still under the old assumption that saturated fat is what we need to worry about. This book disputed that notion forty years ago, and is finally being accepted as mainstream science today, but old science dies hard.

Surprisingly timely!

Surprisingly timely information, despite its last update in the 1980's. Out of print for years. As a physician-scientist, I am glad to see his work stand the test of time. Hopefully will inspire/provoke further action - certainly has for me! The later chapters on his travails defending himself/his work against ignorant industry attacks prove that, sadly, nothing has changed in the ensuing years.

Fun experience with believable characters. Could use some editing.

This was a pretty fun read. Laura was a well fleshed out character and I would like to learn more about her future escapades. She was the kind of person one could like despite her character flaws. The other characters were interesting as well, but less likable for me than they seemed to be portrayed. As someone who knows nothing about the modeling industry, I hope real models don't have to go through what she went through. Still I don't fault the book itself for that. As the protagonist of a tickling story, Laura was destined for these kinds of misadventures.

My only real complaint is that I spotted numerous typos and other errors scattered throughout the book, something I'd normally overlook if I was reading it for free online. As the story itself emphasized, professionalism is important. Just a heads up in case anyone takes issue with things like this.

I like the way the book is layed out. It is easy to follow. The points of grammar match the conversations in each lessons. There are exercises using the CDs which allow you the chance to practice speaking. The vocabulary consists of those words that you need for everyday life. About the Author
Stephen P. Robbins received his Ph.D. from the University of Arizona. He previously worked for the shell Oil Company and Reynolds Metals Company and has taughtat the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Concordia University in Montreal, the University of Baltimore, Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, and San Diego State University. Dr. Robbins; research interests have focused on conflict, power and politics in organizations, behavioral decision making, and the development of effective interpersonal skills. His articles on these and other topics have appeared in such journals as Business Horizons, California Management Review, Business and Economic Perspectives, International Management, Management Review, Canadian Personnel and Industrial relations, and Journal of Management Education.

Dr. Robbins is a best-selling textbook author in the areas of management and organizational behavior. His books have sold in excess of three million copies and are currently used by students in more than a thousand U.S. colleges and universities, and have been translated into16 languages.

Dr. Robbins also actively participates in masters' track competition. Since turning 50 in 1993, he has set numerous indoor and outdoor age-group world sprint records. Seamus Heaney (1939-2013) received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1995. His poems, plays, translations, and essays include Opened Ground, Electric Light, Beowulf, The Spirit Level, District and Circle, and Finders Keepers. Robert Lowell praised Heaney as the "most important Irish poet since Yeats."

A translation that invigorates an ancient and obtuse play

The Cure at Troy yields a measured dose

Seamus Heaney's version of trials for the Greek archer entrusted with Hercules' infallible bow and arrows gives us affirmation and points of reflection. Heaney does not dash the ancient dialogue style on the rocky island; rather it is enriched for the modern reader. Honoring the timelessness of Sophocles, Heaney allows today's reader to make comparisons of private nature and choices with the public need and will. The hero, Achilles' son, Neoptolemus, finds that the strategy to take Troy for the Greeks runs counter to his nature of honesty and integrity. We wrestle with him over the choices. We tumble with him when he loses his grip. We crawl back to sure footing along side the hero. I found myself understanding the characters based on different experiences in my life. Philoctetes bemoans his ill-fated injury which leaves him abandoned and full of vengeance. Human empathy allows him to examine his tight grip on his woundedness without denying what he has endured. Odysseus, the pragmatic lieutenant of war, is shown for his utility and foibles. As in all Greek plays, the chorus calls the characters and the reader to reflection, "...For my part is the chorus, and the chorus is more or less a borderline between the you and the me and the it of it." Heaney got the "it of it" for us to take our own measure.
