Highly Recommended

Many how-to books are little more than freshly-organized common sense, with bullet points and graphics. That is not the case with this book. While it does have useful graphics and while it is commonsensical, the book utilizes a considerable amount of research. It is written with a light touch and the research does not intrude, but it is there.

One simple example: the book argues against study groups. Study groups are defended by many, particularly in business schools. Study groups (we are told) mirror the real world, where we will be working with other people, possessing different expertise, etc. etc. In the real world, however, there are sticks and carrots. Those who do more than their share can be given bonuses; freeriders can be fired. For an example of `study groups' in the unreal world, think of the `group' competitions on American Idol--a generally hellish experience for the serious competitor, one often resulting in a great deal of useless `drama'. In arguing against the use of study groups Stefanie Weisman is flying in the face of a great deal of contemporary educational ideology. On her side, however, is the research of Richard Arum and Josipa Roksa, whose recent (celebrated) book on educational attainment demonstrates that a great number of students in college are not acquiring the skills that their college websites tout. (Among other Arum/Roksa `detrimentals'--joining fraternities and matriculating in business schools.)

Our brains are bodily organs and while we go to college to learn, our physical needs contribute significantly to that process. Thus, the author talks about physical strategies (including diet) that contribute to learning. (Example: good students don't pull all-nighters.) Should we caffeinate or not? To what degree? The advice here is very sensible.

While the book is written in an accessible, straightforward, often humorous voice, it is complemented by statements from a multiplicity of successful students. These sprinkled quotes help enliven the text and offer different perspectives (though there tends to be a great deal of overlap in successful students' strategies).

The book is gutsy. It argues principally for determination and hard work (rather than, e.g., a student's positive self-concept, the summum bonum of colleges of education). It notes, e.g., that digital books are simply not set up for advanced reading techniques. You do much better in working with hard copies. While it seems to be a friendly and convivial book, it is actually taking stands on controversial issues and, in my judgment, those stands are correct.

There is a neat section on nagging, silly errors: its/it's, their/they're/there, etc., errors which drive graders crazy. The author also has a superb command of web resources. (So you need to memorize and you know that mnemonics can help . . . here are some websites that help you to generate mnemonics . . . .)

Bottom line: this is a book on study methods, note taking, paper writing, test taking, reading, time management and academic scheduling (among other things) whose advice is spot-on. It is written by someone who has been there and done that and it is supported by a good bit of contemporary research.

Two observations: while the book has a great deal to say about study groups it has less to say about living arrangements. Students learn from other students. Some have put that percentage of the college learning experience at a number as high as 40%. Students should seek out other students who are equally serious and who have common or related interests. Living with them, dining with them, socializing with them, discussing material with them (not studying in groups or holding up each other's flash cards) can contribute significantly to learning. Serious students can introduce one another to new forms of music, film or the plastic arts; they can share travel experiences, recommend books, and so on. This aspect of college learning represents a serious, comparative advantage for the small liberal arts college (while the majority of students today attend regional public institutions).

A related point concerns work. A vast number of college students today hold jobs, some of which occupy large periods of time. While work experience can prove to be useful in a number of ways, work that is not co-curricular takes up time and saps energy. We all recognize the necessity for work for many students, but there is no getting away from the fact that work can materially reduce the number of learning experiences that a student can have in his or her 4-6 years of college. Balancing work, study and (very important) student indebtedness is a compelling issue, one probably requiring a short book by itself and certainly a great deal of thought.

While The Secrets of Top Students cannot cover every conceivable aspect of the learning experience, it covers a great deal and it does so with skill and, in my judgment, with reliability.

Incredibly Balanced

I've read a few books on doing well in school and most of them focus on a few topics. This book however has an excellent balance between all that areas that I've found help with doing well in school.

Although I don't have quite the credentials as the author, I have picked up a lot of things along the way as I go into my final year at college. There wasn't a single thing in this book that I disagreed with, which I thought was pretty amazing.

I felt that the most important chapters were the ones that didn't even have to do with actually being in school. The first chapter is what I'd consider the most important chapter in the whole book. I have yet to meet a student that does really well that doesn't have an intense motivation for why he/she is at college. The other chapters on taking care of yourself health wise, time management, and how to read a book are the other chapters that I felt were really well written with a lot of good information.

I'd definitely recommend this to anyone that is looking to do better in high school or college. At first it might seem like it is a quick read but I've learned that trying to implement all of these ideas immediately after learning about them would be hard to do. It took me a couple years of high school and college before I felt that I was at a point where I was maximizing my experiences in school. Learning is so awesome. I really wish more people in the world loved it a fraction of what I do =D

Useful insight for high school and college students

As a full-time tutor, I've observed that there is a world of difference between students who merely do well and those who strive to be at or near the top of their class. High-achievers have a MUCH easier time getting into competitive colleges - not because they're necessarily smarter, but because their applications can't help but show their desire and drive to do noteworthy things. This book is for those high-achievers and for any motivated student who genuinely aspires to do better in school - whether it's high school or college.

Weisman, clearly speaking from successful experience, outlines numerous ways to get motivated, get organized, and to achieve. Students will find it easy to relate to her conversational, friendly advice. Even if they just flip through the book, they'll find lots of practical tips and techniques that they can put into immediate use. This is great, because no one tells students how to do this stuff. High schools certainly don't offer much in the way of study skills or organizational advice. Students either find a way that works - or they don't. This book is a nice way to save most students a lot of time.

I might like this book better if it were two books - one for high school, and one for college - but most of the advice overlaps. With that said, it's a great find and should be helpful to those who take the time to peruse it.

Kitsch is Odd Nerdrum's luxuriously produced apologia for the enduring relevance of the old master style. For Nerdrum, this insistence on novelty has permeated the thinking of institutions, critics, artists and the public, and has effectively suppressed what Nerdrum most values in a work of art: sentimentality, passion, pathos and the self-evident skill and emotion of sheer craft. By this latter value in particular, the kitsch painter is able to work according to knowable standards that painting prior to modernism has established--standards that are “more than art,” for, as Nerdrum puts it, “the kitsch painter commits himself to the eternal: love, death and the sunrise.” Kitsch is a manifesto that recruits figurative painters both old and new, such as William Dyce, Paul Fenniak, Sampo Kaikkonen, Isaac Levitan, Osiris Rain, Ilya Repin, Giovanni Segantini, Valentin Serov, George Tooker, George Frederick Watts and Anders Zorn, and situates their work alongside more than 70 of Nerdrum's recent paintings. Alongside essays, poems and plays by the artist, Kitsch contains an extended dialogue on the topic between Nerdrum and Maria Kreyn.

Another good book about Nerdrum

The more I learn about Nerdrum, the better he gets.

First of all, this is a great looking book. Classic linen spine with leather title badge. Beautifully printed, lots of high quality full color reproductions of Nerdrum's work, new and old. Compared to Odd Nerdrum: Themes and Odd Nerdrum: Paintings, Sketches, and Drawings, this book does have some overlap with the images offered, but the majority of Nerdrum's work depicted here is not seen in the other books. Also, some of the work here seems less polished than work we've seen previously. Not inferior (not at all) but different. One gets the impression that work compiled in his previous books were selected very carefully to depict certain themes (obviously, the recent book being called 'Themes'). Some of the new work here would probably not fit in very well amongst some of the other paintings. For instance, one of Nerdrum's paintings here has an airplane in the sky. Really, it does. Nothing wrong with it, it just wouldn't fit with a lot of his desolate landscapes. Also depicted are several new still lifes (mostly fowl), new landscapes and of course many new figure paintings including self portraits. Many pictures of work by Nerdrum's students is here too. Some better than others, of course, but all very nice. An account of Nerdrum's school is also given which gives insight into Nerdrum's practices both as a painter and a teacher.

The 'Kitsch' text in this book is also very good. Though the book was not originally published in English, the language is very natural and easy to follow. (Unlike some translations which end up with awkward sentences and difficult rhythms.) Lots of insight about Nerdrum, and of course Kitsch, is offered here for the first time. I have been a huge fan of Odd Nerdrum for many years...I consider him one of the few genius artists of this century....He is the Rembrandt of our time and I see no one even close to his talent...The Kitsch, More than Art book provides yet another view of this amazing artist and his thoughts about his own work and the work of others....I am very satisfied with my purchase....

The virtuoso painter uses Kitsch in your favor.
It's an interesting research showing that humans can understand contemporary concepts but still inside the same, always sharing your human nature, so, we like beauty, in the past, now or in the future. If dadaists killed art, at least some gave credit to that, it lives like ever and we can call it "kitsch" :-D

A Must Book for NCIDQ Preparation !!!!!

Well-summarized and easy to follow. The book covers almost all the information you need to pass NCIDQ test. There are 23 (or 24!?) chapters and it takes about 2 months to study the entire book. Every chapters starts with reviewing basics so that you do not have to go back here and there of your old textbooks from schools. Combined with 3-day classes for NCIDQ and 1-day class on building codes offered by ASID, I passed NCIDQ on fall, 1996. I did not studied anything-else. This is the right material to study. The shortest way to build up the knowleadge to pass the exam. Trust me !!!!!

this one's the best book to study for the NCIDQ. but they need to make an updated version. i just took the ncidq and items on the test but not in the book were drapery, carpet and wallcovering calculations and sustainable design.

"The Bible" for studying the NCIDQ exam - but not perfect

This is the bible for studying for the NCIDQ exam. I read this chapter by chapter and took the accompanying chapter quizzes (which are unfortunately sold separately) and passed the written portions of NCIDQ with flying colors. It certainly covers the material you need for the exam. Initially I thought just working in the industry for many years would be sufficient to take the exam but after talking to colleagues I learned that you need the study guides to understand "NCIDQ language". After taking the exam, I am glad I worked from this study guide because there were specific words/examples that I never used in daily practice but needed to know for the exam. A couple of things that would make this a superior product - it should be sold in a three ring binder (I studied on public transit and didn't want to carry the whole book everywhere) and the chapter quizzes and practicum example should be included - it certainly costs enough and you really feel like you are getting ripped off to have to pay another $100+ for the practice tests.

Anthony Holden is an award-winning journalist and biographer who has published more than thirty books, including lives of Shakespeare, Tchaikovsky, and Laurence Olivier. LIFE'S MYSTERIES

I loved this book! I absolutely love that the author gave me the indelible picture of how out-of-town our darling planet Earth is and how absolutely enormous the known universe it. Of course, I knew this, but the way he puts it is majestic. I also love the humility of this outstanding scientist. He acknowledges the fundamental mysteries as unknowable. I am going to start it all over again tonight. Thank you, Larry Bell, for your vast knowledge and for your talent in giving the layman access to it!

About the Author

Richards J. Heuer Jr. is best known for his path breaking book, Psychology of Intelligence Analysis, which is used throughout the Intelligence Community. Retired from the CIA, Mr. Heuer has worked with the Intelligence Community in various roles for over five decades. He has won multiple awards for his research and writing, including the CIA Seal Medallion for development of the Analysis of Competing Hypotheses technique.

Randolph H. Pherson, President of Pherson Associates, LLC, has spearheaded teaching and developing analytic techniques and critical thinking skills in the Intelligence Community. He served for 28 years in the Intelligence Community, last serving as National Intelligence Officer for Latin America. He is the recipient of the Distinguished Intelligence Medal and the Distinguished Career Intelligence Medal and author of the Handbook of Analytic Tools and Techniques.

Indispensable reference for forecasters

Anyone involved in any serious forecasting of politics or other social disciplines must have, read, and use this book. Rather than an etherial, academic reflection on why analysis is relevant, or 'what is the role of intelligence analysis', or a mathmatical treatise on Games and Decisions, this is a working reference and practical guide to structured analytical techniques. Although the title specifies "for intelligence analysis", the methodology is applicable to problem sets that are only partially or non-quantifiable, and especially applicable to issues that are ambiguous and where only incomplete information is available.

In many ways, this is the sequel to Psychology of Intelligence Analysis, also by Richard Heuer. Where "Psychology of Intelligence Analysis" focused on analytical biases, with a limited discussion of rigorous approaches to intelligence analysis, "Structured Analytic Techniques" approaches similar issues from a more pragmatic direction. As valuable as the discussion of cognative biases is, the comprehensive set of analystical tools in "Structured Analytic Techniques" does more (when applied) to mitigate many of the biases than mere knowledge of their existance, and the analytical techniques will counteract many biases, even when those biases have not been identified.

Of particular interest is the emphasis on analytical teams and group analysis, both the strengths and weaknesses, and methods for maximizing the strengths and mitigating the weaknesses.

The general pattern of the overall methodology (and chapter titles) is -
-Decomposition and Visualization - to break the information into small elements and arrange these elements (often from diverse source) into a rational pattern.
-Idea Generation - brain storming, but rigorous brain storming that encourages a broad range of perspectives and invites the dissenting and minority opinions to be heard.
-Scenarios and Indicators - develop alternate courses for events to unfold in and the signals that a specific course has been taken.
-Hypothesis Generation and Testing - coming up with explainations given the available information, and figuring out things that will confirm or deny the explaination. Not a trivial problem, but one that is often done in a haphazard fashion. The section on deception detection is especially interesting, and is something not normally addressed outside of intelligence circles.
-Assessment of Cause and Effect - although it seems obvious, the common analytical failure of mirror-imaging necessitates a direct check on the most basic aspects of an analysis.
-Challage Analysis - where 'assessment of cause and effect' is something of a sophisticated fact check, the 'challange analysis' phase is a methodical and critical review of the logic and critical premises and assumptions of an analysis.
-Conflict Management - a chapter expressly about leveraging disagreement in analysis. This is an especially valuable chapter as most earlier works have been written with an emphasis on individual analysts rather than groups and teams.
-Decision support - the ultimate purpose of intelligence and many other kinds of analysis. In the political and military realms (in a democratic nation) the purpose of intelligence is to give leadership the information (both current and predictive) to make decisions. Everything done up to this point is irrelevant if it cannot be effectively communicated to the individuals making the decision and bearing the responsibility for that decision.

And finally...
- Evaluation of Structured Analytic Techniques - Here, I think the intent was good, but it would be easy to use this to justify personal peeves. Techniques are only as good as the users and their rigor. If a technique is used sloppily, the technique isn't bad, the user is. Thankfully, this was much more of a "way forward" than specific methodologies.

In a comb binding with a heavy weight cover and tabs, this is meant for the desk of conference table, not to gather dust on a bookshelf. The range of techniques, the approaches to selecting and using the techniques within a structured methodology, and clarity of this book make it a worthwhile investment for professionals in many fields. A little more depth in the practice of some of the techniques might have been a plus, but the framework of every technique and references for more detailed instruction are provided.

This is the definitive work on the subject, and will remain a timely and valuable text for decades.

One of my required college textbooks. An excellent book in that it lays out the various structured analytic techniques in a clear and easily understood manner. The book is also tabbed which makes it easier to find the material or section that you need.

Excellent Field Manual

I rated this book as a five stars because I have been able apply the content in real world situations and improve my performance. This is an excellent compilation of analysis techniques for decision making. This book is billed as a book for the intelligence community but I find it just as applicable for common business or project decisisons. I would describe this as more of a tool box of techniques that can be utilized to flesh out hidden issues, biases and/or assumptions. Each technique is described, however to effectively utilize the technique you may have to go to the original sources to get additional detail and guidance. This is not a criticism because if each technique was explained fully, you'd have a book that was 900+ pages. For a flavor of the content of this book check out this link:

The shinny parts of this book:
1. It covers broad range of ESL topics in pretty much technical depth. By reading it you get decent knowledge of ESL.
2. The writing style is clear, concise and easy to read. Code examples are easy to follow, rich of diagrams are helpful for reader to grasp importance concepts.

The grey (not dark) sides of this book:
1. It is time for second edition to cover new ESL trends, tools and methodologies such as low power profiling, thermal analysis, open source virtual platforms, Synopsys PA/Virtualizer, Cadence VSP, OVP, etc.
2. Give a real example of how ESL technology helps to boost SW/HW productivity from project management view, and how ESL works with Scrum, Agile, XP, ect. The example should be drawn from a major semiconductor company such as Qualcomm, nVidia, etc.
3. Cover more embedded software development scenarios, such as booting Android, real-time OS, etc.
4. Discuss more types of IP model architecture, such as NoC, multi-media, storage and networking.

FOCUSING ON CONTAMINANT FATE AND TRANSPORT, DESIGN OF ENVIRONMENTAL-CONTROL SYSTEMS, AND REGULATORY CONSTRAINTS

This textbook details the fundamental equations that describe the fate and transport of contaminantsin the water environment. The application of these fundamental equations to the design of environmental-control systems and methodologies for assessing the impact of contaminant discharges into rivers, lakes, wetlands, ground water, and oceans are all covered. Readers learn to assess how much waste can be safely assimilatedinto a water body by developing a solid understanding of the relationship between the type of pollutant discharged, the characteristics of the receiving water, and physical, chemical, and biological impacts. In cases of surface runoff from urban and agricultural watersheds, quantitative relationships between the quality of surface runoff and the characteristics of contaminant sources located within the watersheds are presented.

About the Author

DAVID A. CHIN, PhD, is Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Miami as well as a registered Professional Engineer. Dr. Chin has published extensively, with important contributions on the fate and transport of contaminants in rivers, groundwater, oceans, and watersheds. His research interests also extend to wetland hydrology and vadose-zone hydrology. Dr. Chin is a recipient of the prestigious Collingwood Prize awarded by the American Society of Civil Engineers.

The best book on fate and transport

This book is simply the best book on fate and transport in the water environment. I have used other available books (e.g., Thomann and Mueller, Fischer etal, Schnoor, etc.) but they are all outdated and less comprehensive and less useful than this one.

Great text and reference

I purchased this book for a reference for the PE Civil exam. It covers topics I couldn't find in other text books, mainly relating to processes and quality of natural waters. I thought about selling it back after I passed the exam, but decided to keep it because the information covered is great. It is heavy on fate and transport process equations.
